How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game in which players place chips into the pot in order to bet on their hand. The player with the best five card poker hand wins the pot, which includes all bets placed at each round. If there is a tie, the pot is split between the players with the highest hands. Unlike other games, where the outcome of a hand is completely dependent on luck, poker is a game that requires skill and can be learned with practice.

A hand of poker begins with each player receiving two starting cards, known as hole cards. These cards are dealt face down to each player. A round of betting then takes place, with the player to the left of the button making the first bet. Once all the players have decided what to do with their starting cards, another card is dealt face up on the flop. Then a third card is dealt face up on the turn, and finally a fifth card is dealt on the river.

During the betting phase, players can say “call” to make a bet equal to the previous high bet. They can also say “raise” to increase the amount they bet. In general, raises must be announced out loud or in some other clear way – tapping the table doesn’t count as a raise!

After the betting is complete, each player reveals their hand. The person with the strongest poker hand wins the pot. If there is a tie, the money in the pot is split between the players with the strongest five-card hands.
